Re: “Not the way to save Fort Lyon,” April 25 editorial.
The original plan for Fort Lyon was to convert it into a hospital-residence for the mentally ill veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, many of whom are already homeless due to their mental and emotional wounds.
The major aim of revitalizing the Fort Lyon facility should not be lost — it is to heal, nurture, educate and train our injured veterans and those who have become homeless due to their wounds.
The question is not whether we be should be using (“saving”) Fort Lyon but rather what is the cost of not using the Fort Lyon facility to care for and nurture our homeless veterans and other needy homeless. The costs of not using Fort Lyon — the financial and, more important, the human costs — of not seizing this opportunity should be taken into consideration.
